Dental Examination & Cleaning

Making regular trips you your dentist can keep your teeth and gums completely healthy and can allow us to identify any problems at an early stage and avoid large scale treatment of unidentified problems. We at Triton Road Bettystown Dental endeavour to carry out a thorough periodontal (gum) examination; to establish patterns of disease; to treat, and to educate in the prevention of gum disease.   Oral hygiene instruction is taught as well as brushing techniques and a thorough cleaning is carried out.

Fissure Sealants

The top surfaces of your teeth - where the chewing takes place - aren’t smooth and flat. They are crossed by tiny hills and valleys - called pits and fissures. These are places where plaque can build up safe from your toothbrush and dental floss. Some of the pits and fissures are so narrow that even a single bristle from your toothbrush can’t get deep enough to clean them out. A method of preventing cavities from developing in the pits and fissures is to seal them off with a special varnish called a pit and fissure sealant.

If your dentist determines that you need a pit and fissure sealant to help protect your teeth from decay, some special steps are taken to prepare the teeth first. Your dentist will clean the tooth first, and then apply a mild acid solution to 'etch' the surface and make it easier for the pit and fissure sealant to stick. The whole procedure is quick and painless. You can eat & drink immediately afterwards and requires no anaesthetic or drilling, it’s just like getting a layer of paint on your teeth. Keeping the area dry and away from your saliva during the application is very important. If the tooth gets wet, the sealant might not stick properly. Once everything is ready, your dentist 'paints' the sealant right over the pits and fissures on the tooth surface. A special kind of light sets the sealant.

Filings

Fillings Amalgam & White fillings are carried out under local anaesthetic. These are lining & base materials placed to protect the pulp/nerve in the tooth to ensure optimum results and longevity of all work completed. Aesthetic work is also carried out & we use top quality composites (white filling materials) here at Bettystown Dental.

Crowns

A crown is a type of dental restoration which usually caps a tooth or dental implant and is bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Crowns can be made of a number of materials including gold, porcelain or a combination. Crowns on back teeth are mainly placed for functional (chewing) purposes or to restore the bite. A tooth that has had a root canal treatment and is missing a lot of its natural crown will need a post / core before the artificial crown is placed.

Bridges

If you have a missing tooth as a result of an extraction, the space can be filled in with a bridge. The missing tooth is attached to the teeth on either side of the space with either resin bonded metal or crowns. The resulting bridge is permanently cemented in place. There are normally two visits required.

Cause of Staining

As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes more porous. Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, foodstuffs and tobacco. Certain antibiotic medications (like tetracycline) can also lead to teeth stains or a reduction in the brilliance of the enamel. There are a number of solutions available.

Whitening

Tooth whitening, is a common procedure in general dentistry but most especially in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

Home Bleaching

is a simple, easy way of achieving that brighter smile; having had an impression made of your teeth, special individual, well fitted trays are made into which a gel is then placed. These are worn for a minimum of 4 hours per day until the desired shade change is achieved.
